📝 This film attempts to show the spiritual world of carpet weaving – an ancient kind of craft of nomadic people, passed down from generation to generation. Their beliefs, thoughts, processes and artistry are revealed in the film “Oyum”, which is a play on words and translated from Kyrgyz language as “my thoughts”. The film also reveals ornaments and patterns with which nomads decorate carpets and more. In the absence of the usual literary monologue, all the director’s decisions lie in a purely visual sphere.
👁‍🗨 The Kyrgyz film about traditional carpet weaving is a real documentary treat. With a careful filming and editing approach, the author creates a story that not only visually delights, but also connects the viewers, at least for a moment, to the carpet making process and the tradition that surrounds it. The film, although short, offers a tangible piece of Kyrgyzstan and becomes a meditative experience that the viewer remembers for a long time. This film is a great example that creativity can come from unexpected sources and motives, and the author deserves all the praise for her effort and success.
