Short freestyle film section – Primary school
A GAME BEYOND THE SCREEN (7′), 2025 🎬 Mate Balota Primary School Film group, Buje 📝 The short film “A Game Beyond the Screen” depicts the everyday life of a boy who is too attached to his phone and video games. The boy often spends hours absorbed in the screen, forgetting about friends, playing and socializing outside. His addiction to the digital world starts to worry his parents and teachers, who find it increasingly difficult to get through to him. Through black and white depictions of shadows, the film emotionally conveys a strong message about the importance of balance – technology can be useful, but it should never replace the real world, friendships and playing together. The film encourages young viewers to leave their rooms and their screens and rediscover the beauty of childhood through playing with their peers. 👁🗨 This film is a minimalist portrayal of the popular topic of being fed up with online content, which stands out with its strong black and white visuals. This is due to the somewhat neglected technique of filming shadows, which we consider a valuable and courageous choice. We were particularly impressed by the very creative approach of combining collage, drawings and fiction scenes. 🏆 3rd award of the expert jury (63rd Croatian Children’s Film Festival) 🏆 2nd award of the children’s jury (63rd Croatian Children’s Film Festival)
COME ON, MOM (2′), 2025 🎬 Dr Ivan Novak Primary School Media group from Macinec, Gornji Hrašćan Primary School from Gornji Hrašćan 📝 This film was created as a visual representation, i.e. a kind of upgrade of the literary work of a girl whose life was turned upside down by her mother’s illness. The two of them are still by each other’s side, and although their roles have been reversed, their mutual affection remains. Even the tiniest bit of progress in the mother’s recovery is a great joy and hope that everything will get better. The film was created by editing shots of different patterns that symbolize the narrator’s inner state. The shots were filmed on mobile phones. 👁🗨 Although it deals with a very personal and emotional story, this film is a team effort and the entire group researched how to visually depict the inner world and emotions of the narrator, who we hear off-screen. With its very impressive abstract visual depiction of emotions, the film very touchingly draws us into the intimate relationship between mother and daughter. 🏆 1st award of the expert jury (63rd Croatian Children’s Film Festival)
